Seek redemption and do the walk of shame

Obviously I’d never imagine that any of you good readers have ever endured the ignominy and mortification of a Saturday morning ‘walk of shame.’

I trust though that you’ll be able to imagine the scene – maybe watch Bridget Jones a few times for research – and then reprise it tomorrow, Saturday September 15, for a giggle and to help raise funds for local NGO, ABCs and Rice.

In fact, the Reapers’ Run of Shame is not in the morning, and is a mercifully short-lived affair: no need to take three buses across London in your best ripped stockings and a sparkly dress that looks remarkably at odds with your dull, pain-filled eyes.

Leaving at 2.30pm from Chilli Si Dang, the run/walk/stagger heads down the river. Runners, walkers and staggerers will then be able to take refuge at The Warehouse, a leg-numbing one kilometre away.

There participants will be rewarded with a refreshing glass of sparkling and a Royal D.

The Run is fancy dress of course. “Dress like you haven’t been to bed yet,” advises Monica Butler, a volunteer for ABCs, who came up with the idea and is organising it in conjunction with the Melbourne Run of Shame, also on behalf of ABCs and Rice. And there will be prizes, especially for those who pull off the high heels over the shoulder trick with the appropriate aplomb.

The occasion is not quite a marathon, though I’ve heard that some walks of shame can feel as long. But all care and attention will be taken with runners’ well-being.

“We’re hoping for no collapses from dehydration and heat exhaustion,” quipped Monica. Maybe the ABCs’ truck will be able to pick up any stragglers too.
