Unemployment in Cambodia has now reached 20 percent, according to the Cambodian Development
Resource Institute (CDRI), although the latest official government unemployment rate
from 2004 was only 0.8 percent. The majority of unemployment is in rural areas, said
Sok Sina, CDRI researcher, but youth unemployment is emerging as a major problem
with 12 percent of youths between 10 to 24 being unemployed. Research from the Economic
Institute of Cambodia said thousands of university graduates were unable to find
jobs.
