TAIWAN SMUGGLER TO GET FREE TRIP HOME
A 34-year-old Taiwanese man is expected to be deported back to his native country after he was found trying to smuggle US$16,000 worth of drugs out of Cambodia. In August 2008, the suspect was at Phnom Penh International Airport ready to board a plane to Taiwan. Authorities discovered that he had hidden drugs in his shoes and also in his stomach. The suspect said that he chose to export the drugs since they were readily available in Cambodia.

DODGY WIRING LEADS TO RESTAURANT FIRE
Three women were injured during a fire at a restaurant in Dangkor district on Tuesday. Police said the fire was caused by faulty electrical wires in one of the rooms in the restaurant. Though seven fire trucks arrived on the scene to put out the flames, more than two-thirds of the property was damaged. However, officials said it was fortunate that the blaze did not spread to neighbouring houses. Police told community members that they should check that faulty electric lines be fixed so such problems may be prevented in the future.

GAMING DEN CLOSED FOR WARPING YOUTH
Police arrested the owner of a computer gaming shop and confiscated 20 computers in Dangkor district on Tuesday. The owner has expressed frustration and confusion as to why the police only targeted her shop since other gaming venues were operating in the area. Authorities said that their goal is to bring students’ focus away from gaming and back into more important activities such as their studies and spending time with their families. They added that they plan to target other gaming shops in the neighbourhood.

WIFE BEATER TAKEN IN BY PREY VENG POLICE
A 29-year-old man in Prey Veng province’s Peam Chor district was apprehended for physically abusing his wife on Tuesday. Married for more than three years with three children, the husband has been accused of beating his wife and children on numerous occasions, especially while he was drunk. His wife finally contacted police and a rights group on the day of his arrest.

‘FISHING MACHINE’ SEIZED IN MEANCHEY
An illegal fishing operation in Meanchey district was halted by police on Tuesday. Authorities detained four fishermen and confiscated an illegal machine that was used to kill fish in a local lake. The suspects said that the lack of fish in the lake left them with no choice but to illegally fish so that they can make a living. Another group of fishermen in the area said they were happy that illegal fishing was stopped so that now everyone could catch fish fairly.
