Khieu Samphan defence calls for acquittal at Khmer Rouge tribunal

In a 550-page closing brief submitted to the Khmer Rouge tribunal’s Trial Chamber, the defence team for Khieu Samphan, former Khmer Rouge head of state, articulated its arguments for acquittal on all charges, including genocide, enslavement and extermination. Submitted this month and obtained yesterday, the document argues that discriminatory policies against groups such as the Vietnamese and predominantly Muslim Cham ethnic minorities did not exist, and concludes with the long-standing contention by the defence that Samphan’s innocence hinges on his supposed lack of criminal intent.

Slain peacekeepers returned

Military officials carry the coffin of slain Cambodian peacekeeper Im Sam after his body was brought back to the Kingdom last night from Central African Republic.

The bodies of four Cambodian peacekeepers killed by a Christian militia in Central African Republic two weeks ago were repatriated to the Kingdom and honoured in an airport ceremony late last night. Some attendees clasped tea lights in plastic cups, making for a scattered candlelight vigil for the bodies of driver Im Sam, 36, quality control assistant Seang Norin, 35, excavator driver assistant Mom Tola, 31, and medical staffer Mao Eng, 37. The four were killed in a guerrilla attack, launched by Anti-Balaka elements in CAR, in which a Moroccan peacekeeper also lost his life.

Cambodia and Asean occupy an increasingly important location at the crossroads of global trade routes. The Post’s Matthieu de Gaudemar spoke with Arancha González, executive director of the International Trade Center, on the sidelines of the recent World Economic Forum on Asean summit to discuss global trade uncertainty and its impact on the region. “Asean has come a long way in terms of trade opening and it has done a very good job in terms of tariffs. Tariffs have been massively reduced between Asean members. Today, tariffs are in the order of 1 or 2 percent,” she explained. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Commune elections 2017: Parties already file complaints

A CPP campaign rally crosses paths with an opposition CNRP rally in the capital's Meanchey district on Saturday.

A confrontation between rival rallies in Takeo and the questioning of an opposition candidate by a Military Police officer in Siem Reap prompted both major parties to file complaints with election authorities on the first weekend of the official campaign period. The two separate incidents took place within the first 48 hours of the two-week campaign for the June 4 commune elections, which started on Saturday and saw political parties hold events across the country. The confrontation in Takeo occurred at about 8:30am when marching ruling CPP supporters met a stationary rally of CNRP supporters.
