Youth left ‘alienated’ by CPP

Cambodia's youngest voters have been “alienated” by the ruling party’s corrupt governance, leaving the Cambodian People’s Party scrambling to recoup the coveted youth vote ahead of next year’s national poll, a new paper argues. The article, published in the journal Critical Asian Studies and entitled Coming of age in peace, prosperity, and connectivity, doesn’t examine the fallout from recent commune elections, but it does highlight that the youth voter bloc is highly educated and well-connected to information. About 370,000 more young people become eligible to vote each year in Cambodia, and almost 60 percent of the population is under 30.

Police block Kampuchea Krom activists from delivering petition

Riot police stands in formation to prevent the Kampuchea Krom rally to proceed to National Assembly yesterday outside Phnom Penh's Wat Chas pagoda

About 100 police armed with batons, pistols and rifles blocked the road in front of Phnom Penh’s Wat Chas pagoda yesterday to stop about a dozen activists from marching to the National Assembly to demand a national holiday to mark territorial losses to Vietnam. The police, standing alongside four large trucks fronted by metal barricades, formed a long line with their shields to block the group from departing on an 8-kilometre trek to deliver a petition demanding that June 4, 1949, be commemorated as a national holiday each year. The date marks France’s decision to transfer to Vietnam its Cochinchina colony.

Thy Sovantha files suit after car is smashed up

Social media star Thy Sovantha, seen speaking to the press outside the Phnom Penh court earlier this year, has filed a complaint against San Bunthoeun for inciting the vandalism of her car.

Social media personality Thy Sovantha has filed an incitement complaint against fellow social media provocateur San Bunthoeun after her car was smashed up following a drunken rant posted to Facebook by Bunthoeun. On June 3, he allegedly verbally attacked the former opposition supporter turned ruling party cheerleader via Facebook Live. Sovantha claims the destruction of her property was a direct result of Bunthoeun’s threatening words. “If she is a traitor, why not take action against her? Thy Sovantha! Just take her. Where is she driving to? Lexus 570, just besiege her! Do it!” Bunthoeun is quoted as saying in the complaint

Hun Sen says no room for lying civil servants

Information Minister Khieu Kanharith speaks at an event in May in Phnom Penh.

Prime Minister Hun Sen yesterday reminded newly minted civil servants to focus on serving the people, saying there was little room in public service for bureaucrats who lied, while also using the opportunity to take a potshot at Information Minister Khieu Kanharith. Speaking to around 700 new civil servants who had graduated from the National Institute of Education in Phnom Penh, the prime minister narrated a folktale about four ministers in a king’s court – one who was honest, one who was careless, one who was a liar and one who was a sycophant. Hun Sen said there was only room for the first two in the government.
