“How do you think information technology is affecting today’s youth?”

Ban Lihour, 19, student at National University of Management
“The internet isn’t affecting young Cambodians negatively, but instead it has great benefits that range from searching for information and using it as a study tool. So, if students are using the internet only for entertainment and gaming, then yes – it might not have a great impact on us. But as long as we use it as a tool for knowledge, then there’s nothing to worry about.”

Keo Panha, 21, student at University of Health Sciences
“I think that information technology can affect young Cambodians quite negatively because youth might not know how to use it well or how to use it in an effective way. Some just use it only for chatting and Facebook. Also, spending too much time on the internet can lead to health problems, such as gaining a lot of weight or lack of sleep.”

Sok Kheng, 19, student at University of Putisas
“It’s very difficult to judge whether or not using the internet all the time is healthy or dangerous for young Cambodians. It depends on his or her education and living conditions. For example, if a young person knows how to use the internet for the purpose of studying and searching information, then it can only be good. But if someone is using it to play games all the time, it can have very bad effects.”

Sok Nisa, 16, student at Sonthormok High School
“I don’t think that information technology can harm young Cambodians if they use it the right way, especially for the purposes of studying, relaxing, and general health. In fact, the internet can be beneficial to everyone. If someone only plays games, though, or just uses the internet to entertain themselves, then it can definitely have some negative impacts.”

Te Gichhong, 18, student at Vanda Institute
“Since the whole world is developing with modern technology and the internet, internet use in Cambodia doesn’t affect youth at all. We all live in a modern society, so it’s just a matter of adjusting and keeping up with change. New information technology is quick, easy and globalised, so it helps to develop our country. It will offer even more benefits in the future as it continues to grow.”
