‘Mentally ill’ man under scrutiny over house fire

An allegedly mentally ill man is being examined by police after breaking into a home on Sunday and attempting to set it ablaze.

Police said the 38-year-old from Mondulkiri had been roaming the village with a machete before climbing into the home of a family of indigenous villagers.

The family escaped through a window. Left alone inside, the man then told villagers he planned to burn the building down.

Afraid to go in after him, police instead used the hose from an arriving fire truck to blast him into submission. DEUM AMPIL
