Twenty families of Boeung Kak lake’s Village 1 accepted government compensation last week in exchange for leaving the site, officials and residents said. Sok Penhvuth, deputy governor of Daun Penh district, said the families had come to collect compensation despite the fact that a notice announcing compensation collection times had not yet been released. However, a 44-year-old man from Village 1, who asked not to be identified, said he had only accepted the money for lack of a better option. “I am afraid they will evict us and then pay us nothing,” he said. “That is why I accepted.”
