Charity founder in the running for CNN award

The founder of a Siem Reap-based children’s charity is in the running for CNN’s Hero of the Year, a spokesman for the media company said yesterday. Ponheary Ly, a former teacher who began covering the school fees of rural Cambodian children with tips earned while working as a tour guide, has since founded the Ponheary Ly Foundation, which supports 2,000 students. An awards ceremony is to be held in November.
