The Cambodian government announced that the long delayed commune elections, originally

planned for shortly after the 1993 UNTAC-supervised national elections, will take

place in February, 2002. The government is seeking foreign donor funding for the

estimated $24 million cost of the elections. Commune election-related violence has

already claimed the lives of at least three prospective non-CPP commune election

candidates.
