Commune funds

The UN Development Pro-gramme's Partnership for Local Governance Project

announced April 10 it will give $1.4 million to the fund for the country's new

commune councils. The money will be used this year to support the administrative

and development activities of 509 communes in 15 provinces. The councils, which

are part of the government's efforts at devolving power, were elected on

February 3, 2002.
