Former police officer on trial over rape

A FORMER police officer admitted raping a 15-year-old girl at his trial yesterday. Ex-captain with Phnom Penh Municipal Police Hem Sokunthea was charged with the offence following his arrest in the capital’s Russei Keo district in June. His victim had tried to commit suicide by swallowing laundry powder. At court, the former official said: “I promise that I will no longer commit [rape] again when I am freed.” A sentence is due on October 7.
