The German government signed an agreement to provide $4.5 million to the Mekong River
Commission (MRC) on October 24. The money will be used in forest rehabilitation,
training government officials, and helping local communities take part in land-use
planning. The areas targeted for the project are on the Laotian, Thai and Vietnamese
borders, which have some of the highest deforestation rates in the world.
