KUALA LUMPUR (AP) - ASEAN should eventually expand to include all ten nations
in Southeast Asia, Finance Minister Anwar Ibrahim said on Oct. 4. "Four have
yet to join us and stand among us.We should redress this deficiency expeditiously,"
Anwar told a forum on "One Southeast Asia." The four non-members in the
region are Cambodia, Laos, Burma, and Vietnam.
Noting that the countries in ASEAN are growing twice as fast as the others, Anwar
said there should not be two Southeast Asias, one rich and one poor.
