A former soldier committed suicide by setting off a grenade in Battambang Town’s O’Char commune on Tuesday night.

Police said that on the night of his death, Porng Huoth, 49, had been drinking with friends before returning home.

The man had allegedly been plagued by worries about how he could afford the cost of his son’s wedding.

He had threatened to kill his pregnant wife with the grenade, throwing it into a mosquito net before hugging it to his chest and running down the stairs.

He was killed immediately by the explosion.
