Tokyo (AP) - A senior Foreign Ministry official, discussing the huge U.S. trade deficit
with Japan, joked in early March that the U.S. could be eligible for Japanese aid.
Japan's sales to the United States exceeded its purchases of U.S. goods by nearly
U.S. $50 billion in 1992. The official was speaking with reporters on the condition
he not be named.
