A deal struck on Thursday between InStedd, Google’s humanitarian technology project, and local telecommunications company Smart Mobile, has paved the way for a new IT system that could help the Ministry of Health rapidly detect disease outbreaks. The system is built on existing open-source software aimed at providing cheap services to people using the most basic mobile phones or computers.
