The ruling CPP unanimously selected Hun Sen on December 12 to lead the next government

should it win the general election in July 2003. Party president Chea Sim announced

that the CPP's 21-member Standing Committee 'has unanimously chosen Hun Sen ... to

be the sole candidate for post of prime minister'. Recent rumors suggested the PM

had faced challengers for the position from within the party.
