Soldier fined for illegal wood transport

A 47-YEAR-OLD solider from the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces was fined 20 million riel (around US$5,000) yesterday at Phnom Penh Municipal Court for illegally transporting luxury wood last year. Var San was detained on Christmas Day in Phnom Penh’s Russei Keo district with 5.2 cubic metres of wood, which he had transported from Preah Vihear province. His lawyer, Chheng Phat, said he would appeal and aimed to reduce the fine.
