January 18: Ing Sovanny, 29, a HALO Trust de-miner, died instantly after
intentionally exploding a hand grenade at 5:30 am in Trapaing Sas Village, Siem Reap.
Police said the victim, who was married with four children, killed himself after
a routine blood test produced an HIV-AIDS positive result. However, a doctor from
HALO later said that the clinic had made a mistaken diagnosis and that Sovanny had
serious malaria rather than HIV-AIDS.
January 18: Sun Pet and Chaut Vanchan, clerks from Phnom Penh municipal court,
were arrested for corruption after allegedly receiving $2000 from a brothel owner
in Thmei village, Sihanoukville. Provincial Prosecutor Mam Mith said that Un Bunna,
a muncipial court judge , and his clerk, Um Rina, were not arrested because they
could not be found.
January 19: Kong Sang, 23, a garment worker, was found floating in a canal at
6:30 am in Trapaing Kuol Village, Ang Snoul district, Kandal. Police said the victim
was beaten to death by four friends because he interceded during his friends' attempt
to rob a passerby. Ym Rithy, 19, and Song Boret, 20, soldiers from a special military
unit, were arrested.
January 19: Theng Sary, 60, and his wife, Yi Yon, 44, were gunned down at
9:30 pm on the balcony of their house in Doung Mean village, Ek Phnom District, Battambang.
Police said the victims were hit three times each with an AK-47 and attacked with
one grenade by an unknown man. Police said jealousy was suspected for the killing
as one person had tried to a develop a relationship with Yon, but was rebuffed.
January 19: Tep Phanara, 37, was found dead in the early morning near the
riverside in Mitapheap commune, Sihanoukville. Police said the victim was chopped
several times in the head and cheek with an ax. The reason was not known. Svay Sam
Ang, 30, and Kong Vuthy, 23, were arrested as suspects as they had drunk wine with
the victim the night before.
January 20: Koy Lien, 24, was shot and wounded in a robbery at 9:30 pm while
riding a motorbike on Street 109 in Monorom commune, Phnom Penh. Police said the
victim, a security-guard from Serey Pheap market, was hit once in the left check
by two people ,who stole his bike. The victim was sent to Calmette hospital after
the incident. The robbers escaped.
January 21: Chhim Saron, 18, was beaten nearly to death while attempting to
steal a motorbike at 1:30 pm in Boeng Raing commune, Daun Penh district, Phnom Penh.
A witness said Saron abandoned the motorbike and tried to escape after a neighbor
raised the alarm. Saron was turned over to police after being beaten with sticks
and rocks by neighbors.
January 21: Ros Wa, 22, was sent to Calmette hospital after he was shot and
wounded in the afternoon in Monorom commune, Phnom Penh. Police said the victim was
hit in the neck with an AK-47 by a neighbor, Choy Choeun, 26, who was angry as Wa
was noisy and refused to stop playing with children while Choeun was gambling. Choeun
fled the scene.
January 21: Zhou Zhen, 37, a Chinese woman, died after being sent to Calmette
hospital after being found in the swimming pool of the Plaza Hotel in Phnom Penh.
A witness said the victim had been swimming alone.
January 21: Ung Seahuot, 33, was knifed and seriously injured in a quarrel
at 8 pm in Kroal Koo Village, Russei Keo District, on the outskirts of Phnom Penh.
Police said the victim was chopped several times by Hout Pheng, 17, who was angry
after his father was knocked down by Seahuot. Ung Seatry, 18, a brother of the victim,
was also injured while attempting to assist Seahout.
January 22: Ly Vandy, 43, was arrested after he attempted to kill a 9-year-old
boy in Yia Yous Village, Kampong Cham. Police said the victim, Hang Kimhong, was
persuaded by Vandy to go fishing with him in a forest about three kilometers from
the village. Vandy then beat the boy into unconsciousness with a long stick in order
to steal his 11,000 riels. Kimhong was sent to the provincial hospital.
January 23: Chip, 35, died in Calmette hospital after he suddenly lost consciousness
at 11:30 am in a guest-house in Boeng Salang commune, Toul Kok district, Phnom Penh.
Police said the victim, a moto-taxi driver with three children from Kandal province,
was beaten on the head with a stick after being given poisoned wine by a passenger
who stole his bike.
January 23: Wet Lous, 33, was found hanging from the roof of her cottage at
5 am in Kak Sekam village, Sra Nge commune, Siem Reap. Police said the victim, who
was four months pregnant, possibly hanged herself because she owed three damleung
of gold to neighbors.
January 24: Dau Yoeun, 17, was knifed to death at 5 pm while walking with
his friend and looking at fishing in Lou Village, Russei Keo District, on the outskirts
of Phnom Penh. Police said the victim was stabbed by two of 10 people as an act of
revenge after Yoeun had recently stepped on their feet while dancing. The assailants
escaped.
January 25: Aun In, 22, died in hospital after being knifed in a quarrel while
returning from dancing in Svay Chour village, Saang district, Kandal. Police said
the victim was stabbed in the chest by Kith Tau, 19, Nol Neth, 18, and Yoeun Kim,
18, who were arrested.
January 25: Srey Mao, 22, was sent to hospital after she attempted to kill
herself at a guest-house in Tonle Bassac commune, Phnom Penh. Police said the victim
was very angry and stabbed herself twice in her right breast after a neighbor told
that her husband, a moto-taxi driver, had given a ride to a unidentified girl.
January 25: A 11-year-old teenage girl was allegedly raped while guarding
a water melon field in Anlong village, Kandal. Police said the victim was brought
into a forest and raped by a neighbor, Moeun Von, 25, who told police he had kidnapped
the victim, but denied the rape allegation.
January 26: Long Dy, 20, was knifed and severely injured in a quarrel while
riding a motorbike with other friends in front of the Orkiday Karaoke Club in Boeng
Raing commune, Phnom Penh. Police said the victim was stabbed twice in the chest
and throat by a group of gangsters. He was sent to Preah Ketomealea hospital after
the incident but later died.
January 27: Five people were arrested for a robbery and murder they were accused
of committing recently in Kampong Cham. Police said the suspects, Prum Savoeun, 30,
from Svay Rieng, Khim Chep, 22, Thau Ym, 25, and Meas Hong, 21, from Prey Veng and
Phlang Phoeun, 28, from Kandal, escaped to Phnom Penh and stayed in a guest-house
in Chak Angre Krom commune. Police confiscated three motorbikes from the suspects.
January 27: A suspected case of mistaken identity sent Chhun Songwadh Vichea,
27, to Calmette Hospital after he was beaten nearly to death in Tonle Bassac commune,
Phnom Penh. Police said the victim was blocked by a car carrying four gangsters carrying
long sticks near Hun Sen Park. The four attacked him in their confusion.
January 27: Kong Sophoan, 24, was stabbed and severely injured in a quarrel
in Prek Tanou village, Mean Chey district, Phnom Penh. Police said the victim was
hit in the chest with a steel bar by Dho Minh Ngek, 21, who was angry as he was knocked
down. Ngek was arrested, but he was released later after he paid $500 to Em Limhel,
a police deputy inspector.
January 28: Sieng Hay, 12, died instantly in an accident at 7:40 am on Monireth
Blvd in Steung Meanchey village, Mean Chey district, Phnom Penh. Police said the
victim fell off his bicycle into the path of a speeding truck. The driver, Mon Mao,
was arrested but released after $500 was paid to district police.
January 28: Tidh Sophan, 49, a colonel from the Military Navigation Unit,
was found hanging at 5 am in the toilet of his house in Chroy Changva village, Russei
Keo district, Phnom Penh. Police said the victim hanged himself because of despair
over chronic liver disease. However, his family said Sophan had wanted to die ever
since his older son died in an accident.
January 28: Srey Phea, 25, died after being sent to Calmette hospital after
she was knifed at midnight at Phnom Pehn's Chhai Hour Hotel. A witness said the victim,
a masseuse, was stabbed in the heart by a cleaner, Keo Srey Ny, who was angered after
Phea accidentally knocked her dress to the ground while walking into a toilet without
knocking. Srey Ny was arrested.
January 29: Soth Neng, 32, was beaten and injured at 10 am at a guest-house
in Sleng Roling Village, Russei Keo District, Phnom Penh. Police said the victim
was hit several times on the head by her 33-year-old husband, Heng Boret, a construction
worker, who became angry after his wife intervened while he was holding their daughter
in a headlock. He was arrested.
