January 15: Him Savoeun, 34, was shot with

a K-54 handgun and seriously wounded at 10:00 pm while she and her husband were walking

to a play at Sovan Thoamareach pagoda in Ponhea Pon commune, Kandal. Police said

the victim was shot once from behind by a robber who took a one-damleung necklace.

January 16: Sun Oeun, 40, a taxi-driver, was arrested for a rape he is accused

of committing two weeks ago in Trapaing Romchek village, Dongkor district, outside

the city. Police said the capture came after the victim's family complained to local

authorities. The victim, who is a 23-year-old widow, garment worker Mom Ny, was raped

while she was in Oeun's taxi going to her house.

January 16: An Kai, 52, and his wife Sok Heng, 52, were released after paying

$3,000 to their kidnappers. Police said the victims were captured at 5:00 pm while

visiting in a banana field in Khnai Tasom precinct, Barai district, Kampong Thom

by six kidnappers who had AK-47s and were wearing para uniforms.

January 17: Chheng Sreng, 45, a motor spare-parts shop owner, was released

at night after his family paid $40,000 to kidnappers who demanded $300,000 ransom.

Police said the victim was captured two days ago by six offenders while stopping

his Toyota car in front of his house in Toul Svay Prey 2 precinct, Phnom Penh.

January 17: Two suspected robbers were shot dead at midnight while exchanging

fire with authorities after robbing a motorbike in Tomnup Toul Kok precinct. Police

said the 21-year-old moto-taxi driver, Boun Beng, was hit on the head from behind

and seriously injured while parking to get money from the robbers.

January 17: One person died and four others were seriously injured in an accident

at 10:00 am on National Road 4 in O'Trao precinct, Mitapheap district, Sihanoukville.

Police said the victims were on a Kamas truck when its front tire blew and it went

into a crevasse while returning from Kampong Speu province with a load of sand.

January 18: Um Long, 27, a moto-taxi driver, was shot with a K-59 handgun

and seriously wounded at 7:30 pm while parking to get money from a traveler in Papial

Khe village, Kean Svay district, Kandal. Police said the victim, who was married

with three children, was shot once from behind by a traveler who took his motorbike.

The victim died at Calmette hospital.

 

January 18: Taing Kong, 38, died in an accident at 10:06 pm while crossing

National Road 2 in Toul Roka village, Mean Chey district, outside the city. Police

said the victim, who was married with six children, was hit by an LS.450 motorbike

driven by a dental doctor who was drunk. The driver was travelling from Phnom Penh

toward Ta Khmau town.

January 18: A 38-year-old woman, Sok Sokhon, was shot dead at 10:30 pm while

she was at home in Toul Meas village, Lavia Em district, Kandal. Police said the

victim, who is a very poor farmer, was shot once in the chest with an AK-47 and died

instantly. Three unidentified offenders escaped safely after the incident.

January 18: Ly Chheng, 28, was arrested at 11:10 am after conspiring with

four others to take $12,000 from the Healot Pharmaceuticals Import-Export Company.

Police said the offender, who is an accountant at the company, arranged for his accomplices

to rob him while he was bringing cash to the bank in Boeng Keng Kang 1 precinct.

January 18: The body of Min Prey, 51, was found hanging on a tree in a rice-field

in Srakey Daung village, Battambang. After inspection, police said the victim, who

was a very poor farmer, was hit with a big knife several times in his head and face

by unidentified assailants. The motive for the killing was not known.

January 19: A 22-year-old girl, Top Mom, was found dead at 5:30 am in a guest

house located in Chatomuk commune, Phnom Penh. After inspection, police said the

naked victim, who is a fruit shake seller, was killed by her unidentified boyfriend

who took an eight-chi bracelet, a two-chi ring and 200,000 riels, and escaped after

the killing.

January 19: Poeu Chamroeun, 28, was arrested for a murder he is accused of

committing a year ago in Khsach Prochhas Krom village, Kroch Chhmar district, Kampong

Cham. Police said his capture came after the victim's family complained to the provincial

court. Chamroeun is alleged to have killed a policeman, Ieng Siphan, and to have

taken his motorbike.

January 19: Than Pheap, 22, was robbed of his motorbike at midnight while

carrying his girlfriend on Preah Monivong Blvd in Srah Chak commune, Toul Kok district.

Police said the victim, who is a Phnom Penh criminal police officer, was robbed by

five people in a car, who escaped empty-handed after authorities came to help.

January 19: Van Wad, 59, a farmer, was shot dead with an AK-47 at 9:40 pm

while he was at home in Kambor village, Kralanh district, Siem Reap. Police said

the victim was shot dead on the spot by five robbers who had AK-47s and were wearing

military uniforms. The robbers escaped safely after the killing and took three cows.

January 20: Chem, 17, was chopped to death at 5:30 pm while helping his mother

in a dispute with her husband in Boeng Sangke village, Bavel district, Battambang.

Police said the victim was hit several times on the head by 47-year-old Roeun, his

stepfather. The assailant was arrested after the incident.

January 20: Mao Seuy, 16, was shot dead at midnight while returning from watching

a play in Ta Pich village, Kralanh district, Siem Reap. Police said the victim was

shot with an AK-47 by two unidentified robbers who took a one-damleung necklace and

a two-chi ring. The assailants escaped safely after the incident.

January 20: Ma Sophy, 43, was shot and seriously wounded at noon while she

was riding a motorbike slowly in Prek Preah Sdech village, Svay Por district, Battambang.

Police said the victim was shot with a K-54 handgun by 18-year-old Chhouy Sophal,

who attempted to steal her motorbike. The robber, who is a pupil from Neat Yang secondary

school, escaped empty-handed.

January 21: A 42-year-old woman, Khim Thol, was robbed of eight million riels

at 9:30 pm in Ta Pao village, Thbaung Khmum district, Kampong Cham. Authorities said

the victim was grabbed and kissed by four unidentified robbers who also took a seven-damleung

and a five-chi necklace. The robbers escaped safely.

January 22: Seng Kimnay, 46, a Sambat Neary Khmer silk shop-owner, was released

at midnight after paying $170,000 to her kidnappers. The victim was seized two days

ago by four kidnappers with AK-47s near the Kirirom cinema precinct, Phnom Penh.

She was leaving the Romchang clinic and walking toward her car when she was grabbed.

January 22: Two people died and six others were seriously injured in an accident

at 8:00 am in Trapaing Chrey village, Kampong Siem district, Kampong Cham. Police

said the victims, who were in a Nissan car, were hit from the front by a Kamas truck

while trying to overtake a tourist's car on National Road 7.

January 22: Nem Nuth, 32, was beaten and seriously injured at 7:00 pm while

parking his motorbike to talk with his friend in Koh Rah village, Lavia Em district,

Kandal. Police said the victim, who is a policeman, was beaten on his head with a

long piece of steel by Choeun Sam Aun, who attempted to steal his motorbike. The

assailant was arrested.

January 23: Haing Ngun, 19, a goods seller, was critically injured in a

quarrel at the Olympic market in Phnom Penh. Police said the victim was chopped six

times on his head and back by another goods seller, Huot Hour. The accused had been

charged with kidnapping one year earlier. The victim was sent to Calmette hospital,

but he was expected to die later due to his massive head injuries.

January 23: Muong Visoth, 29, suffered serious head injuries in an accident

at 7:50 pm in Ta Ngoun village, Dongkor district, Phnom Penh. Police said the victim

was hit by a small truck while he was riding a motorbike on Russian Federation Blvd.

He was sent to Calmette hospital, but he was not expected to live.

January 23: Meach Sroeung, 38, was hacked to death at 1:30 pm in a quarrel

in Prek Tamep precinct, Koh Thom district, Kandal. Police said the victim was chopped

several times on his head and body by his younger brother, Meach Sreng, 25, who was

angry after his older brother stole his tape player and sold it for 60,000 riels.

The assailant was arrested after the incident.

January 24: Kao El, 20, a moto-taxi driver, was sent to Ta Khmau hospital

after being found unconscious in the early morning in the town. Police said the victim,

who came from Kampong Thom province and stayed for a while in Russei Keo district,

was beaten and seriously injured by two robbers who took his motorbike.

January 24: Mom Srun, 30, a bicycle repairer, was found dead at 6:00 pm in

Khsam village, Kampong Chhnang. After inspection, police said the victim, who was

married with five children, was electrocuted when he touched an iron gate near the

Vietnamese brothels. The gate was electrified as a defense against robbers.

January 25: A 55-year-old woman, Sun Kheng Ry, became the victim of pickpockets

while she was on a moto-taxi on street 96 in Wat Phnom precinct, Phnom Penh. Police

said the two pickpockets on a Crystal motorbike - Hi Sokhim, 18, and Im Pros, 18

- were arrested by policeman while trying to escape. They hit a car after the incident.

January 25: Phin Sokhon, 39, was shot dead at 9:10 pm while leaving a meeting

with a motorbike toward his house in Daun Chong village, Kampong Trabek district,

Prey Veng. Police said the victim, who is a deputy chief of district police, was

shot once with an AK-47 in his chest by three robbers who took his motorbike.

January 26: Sao Sophat, 27, was arrested at 9:30 am by police while waiting

for a taxi in Chroy Changwa precinct, Phnom Penh. Police said his capture came after

Um Sophal, 32, from Takeo province, complained to police that the offender took his

motorbike and sold it for US$170.

January 26: The body of a 25-year-old man, Yang Khlim, was found floating

in a lake at 1:00 pm in Trapaing Sangke village, Ponhea Leu district, Kandal. Police

said the victim, who had gone with some villagers to plant dry-season rice, was drowned

while swimming home. His ankle was entangled with grass.

January 27: Six people were released back home after paying $700 to their

kidnappers. Police said the victims were seized one day ago and brought into the

forest by five unidentified offenders who had AK-47s and were wearing masks and demanded

$5,000 ransom. The incident happened in Veal Vong village, Tbaung Khum district,

Kampong Cham.

January 27: Ieng Chantha, 35, was shot and seriously wounded at 7:30 pm while

riding a motorbike in Bak Kheng village, Russei Keo district. Police said the victim

was shot twice from behind in the back and chest by his friend who attempted to kill

Chantha to keep him silent because the assailant owed him some money. The assailant,

whose name is known to police, escaped safely after the incident.

January 28: Reth, 24, died instantly in an accident at 7:30 am while he was

crossing Russian Federation Blvd in Teuk Thla commune, Russei Keo district with a

motorbike. Police said the victim was hit by a Yamaha Crypton motorbike driven by

Heng Samon, 19, who is a pupil from Antarak Tevy primary school in Phnom Penh.

January 28: Ly Mong, 47, was beaten and seriously injured at midnight while

leaving with a motorbike from Chhouk Ruoth restaurant on street 205 in Tomnop Teuk

precinct. Police said the victim was hit with a long piece of steel by five people

who attempted to steal his motorbike. The robbers were arrested by police after the

incident.
