A married couple was handed hefty prison sentences yesterday after a court convicted them of smuggling several children and elderly Cambodians to Malaysia last year to beg on the streets. Heng Chhon, 48, and his wife Sam Nang, 38, were both sentenced to 15 years after six victims were rescued by authorities, including the couple’s 7-month-old adopted daughter, a court official said. Presiding judge Taing Sun Lay said: “The court has decided to convict them to 15 years each in prison for unlawful removal with purpose.”
