The 5000 Steps for "Kampot Saat" programme, set to take place on Sunday, August 25, aims to raise awareness and encourage Cambodians to focus on environmental issues and clean living.
The annual initiative, which has garnered significant public attention, is being organised by the Junior Chamber International Mekong Branch. It was inspired by the Phnom Penh Saart campaign.
Sar Rithy, Project Manager of "Kampot Saat" 2024, emphasised the campaign's importance: "Because we have observed that people’s awareness of correct garbage disposal in this province remains limited, we aim to spread and share important educational messages related to maintaining the environment, hygiene and waste management."
He added, "The province is also an ecotourism area that can attract national and international tourists, as well as helping to boost the economy and reducing environmental impact."
First launched in 2019, the "Kampot Saat" project is now in its sixth year. It continues to promote environmental care through clean habits, consideration, rejection and repair, enhancing the beauty of Cambodia.
This year's campaign, themed "Continuing Clean Habits for Our Country," will feature three major activities: consideration, repair and recycling of waste and other consumables.
Rithy noted the increased participation from Kampot residents and youth, especially the young people of Visit Kampot, who are eager to spread the campaign's message.
The event will take place in Kampot province, with support from relevant ministries, partners, the public and many students.
The 5,000 Steps Campaign will start at the Durian Roundabout and end at the grassy beach, covering nearly 5 km. This campaign symbolizes unity for the environment and humanity, fostering solidarity and sharing.
Rithy expects strong support from the community, particularly students, to raise awareness about environmental issues.
"The presence of all of you is an important catalyst in transforming Kampot into a model province and attracting more and more national and international tourists," he said.
With increased social media support and cooperation from ministries and companies, the number of participants this year is expected to reach around 300. The Phnom Penh Post and SR Digital Media are exclusive media partners of the event.
Rithy expressed optimism about the campaign's impact: "After this campaign is successful and fruitful, we will learn more about the main problems encountered in Kampot, especially related to environmental issues, so next year we can repeat the campaign in a more effective and targeted way."
Participants who complete the programme will receive a Kampot T-shirt, a bottle of environmental water and a medal. Special prizes will be awarded to the top three participants. Event packages are available for $20 and $30, including T-shirts, medals, water bottles, snacks, and sponsor vouchers.
