Sokhonn meets with Brunei counterpart ahead of ASEAN Ministerial Meetings

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Prak Sokhonn had an online meeting with his Brunei-Darussalam counterpart Erywan Yusof on July 21 to discuss issues related to the upcoming 55th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting and other related meetings as well as to further deepen the bilateral friendship between both countries.

Cambodia and Brunei reached their 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations this year, according to the July 21 press statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

The statement said that during the meeting, Yusof shared his views on how to enhance dialogue partnerships between ASEAN and the United Kingdom and New Zealand, with Brunei acting as the ASEAN Country-Coordinator.

He also reiterated the full support of Brunei for Cambodia’s ASEAN chairmanship given the difficulties involved with steering ASEAN through the many monumental challenges collectively faced by the world today. He also offered his praise and support for Sokhonn’s untiring efforts as the special envoy of the ASEAN chair on Myanmar and his attempts to further advance the implementation of ASEAN’s Five Point Consensus.

“Both sides reiterated their commitment to strengthen multilateral cooperation for the sake of peace, stability, and sustainable development in the region and beyond,” the press statement said.

It also said the ministers discussed bilateral relations and the close friendship between the two countries over the past three decades, which have been continuously strengthened in various areas for the mutual benefit of the two peoples and nations.
