The National Election Committee (NEC) has announced that more than 9.7 million Cambodians are registered on the voter list for the general election which will be held on July 23.

The announcement was made at a February 21 meeting, held to publicise the validation and publication of the official 2022 voter list.

According to the NEC, there are 9,710,655 officially registered voters on the list, accounting for 89.28 per cent of the total population aged 18 and over.

Em Sophat, the NEC member who chaired the meeting, explained the process of preparing the list.

“First, we posted the previous list, along with one of the names that were scheduled to be removed from it. Once the two had been publicly posted, we accepted complaints and objections, and then resolved them appropriately. Once all of our data was verified, we corrected the list and posted the final version,” he said.

“The removals were due to death, temporary disenfranchisement, migrations, duplicate names and/or a lack of legal identification. A total of 271,142 names were removed,” he added.

He said the list of voters that were removed was posted at all commune council offices – and on the NEC’s website and NEC KH app – for final public review on January 13.

Sophat added that commune councils received a total of 91 complaints, all of which had been successfully resolved at the commune council level.
