ANA invites public to watch spring equinox sunrise at Angkor Wat

The Apsara National Authority(ANA) alerted the public about the upcoming Angkor Wat Spring Equinox event, which will occur on March 21.

"Equinox" simply means that the duration of day and night is equal and the sun rises exactly over the central peak of Angkor Wat, which can be seen from the western entrance and will occur on March 21 this year.

The alignment of Angkor Wat’s centre with the rising sun on the spring and fall equinoxes, as well as other factors, demonstrates the knowledge of astronomy and the advanced building techniques possessed by the Khmer Empire, according to historians.

In the bas-relief at Angkor Wat, the position of the churning pivot corresponds to the spring equinox and and the 91 asuras in the south represent the 91 days from fall equinox to winter solstice and the 88 northern devas represent the 88 days from spring equinox to summer solstice.

One UK news outlet recently ranked Angkor Wat as the number one place in the world to watch the sunrise because of the equinox alignment phenomenon.

According to ANA, there will be another alignment of the rising sun at the Autumn equinox on September 22.

“The public, including all tourists, are invited to attend. Please come and take great pictures of this spectacular event,” the ANA said.
