Arrest over gold heist

One of the suspects in a fatal armed robbery of a jewellery shop in Tbong Khmum province this week was arrested in Phnom Penh on Wednesday, police said yesterday.

Nuon Samnang, 22, was apprehended in Daun Penh district after he and three others allegedly robbed a gold vendor on November 2, municipal police officer Chour Sok Heng said.

“He was one of four armed robbers who shot and injured a gold vendor,” he said.

During the robbery, shop owner Pang Pov, 54, returned fire, allegedly shooting dead one of Samnang’s alleged accomplices, Poan Sina, 32. The group had allegedly been dressed in military fatigues and armed with AK-47s rifles and handguns.

Pov claims he lost $300,000 in the robbery. Samnang told police that the group had stolen only about $25,000 and a bag of gold.
