ASEAN militaries discuss stockpiles

Defence officials from ASEAN member states gathered in Phnom Penh on Monday for a workshop on managing munitions stockpiles and destroying surplus stock in a safe and secure manner. Thomas Heilmaier, the German charge d’affaires in Phnom Penh, said in a speech Monday that the problem of surplus ammunition was a global challenge that needed to be addressed “in a proper and environmentally friendly way” to prevent it from falling into the hands of non-state actors. Other specialists spoke about the risks posed by surplus ammunition and strategies for destroying and recycling excess stocks.
