Australia reaffirms support for Cambodia's ASEAN chairmanship

Australia has reiterated its support for the Cambodian Ministry of Women's Affairs in organising the ASEAN Women Leaders' Summit 2022, and its commitment to further cooperation on women's empowerment, and combatting gender-based violence and human trafficking.

Will Nankervis, the Australian ambassador to ASEAN, conveyed his government's support and commitment during a meeting with women’s affairs minister Ing Kantha Phavi on January 12 as part of his visit to strengthen cooperation with the bloc, which Cambodia chairs this year. Nankervis was accompanied by Australian ambassador to Cambodia Pablo Kang.

During the meeting, Kantha Phavi and Nankervis shared experiences and discussed cooperation between the two countries on priority areas.

“The Australian side reaffirmed their support as the ministry prepares to host the ASEAN Women Leaders' Summit. They are also looking to enhance cooperation on priority areas such as the economic empowerment for women, and the prevention of gender-based violence and human trafficking,” the ministry said in a statement.

The Australian embassy in Phnom Penh said Nankervis would be in Cambodia for a couple days to reassure support for the Kingdom as the ASEAN chair. Nankervis also reiterated Australia's commitment to the ASEAN-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

“Australia supports a strong and resilient ASEAN at the heart of the Indo-Pacific. We look forward to working with Cambodia during its ASEAN Chair Year!” the embassy said.
