Thailand's Klong Prem Central Prison will allow increased visiting hours and the easier transfer of money from the relatives of prisoners, according to an announcement released by Cambodia’s General Department of Prison under the Ministry of Interior.

Klong Prem Central Prison is known to house many migrant workers from the Kingdom over border and visa irregularities, and illegal logging crimes.

The Bangkok jail will allow those detained there to have four-hour visits with relatives on April 29 and 30 from this year.

Visits will be held from 9am until 1pm and be face to face without the prisoners being separated from their relatives by bars. The new arrangements are to be in addition to the normal visits allowed every working day.

“The permission to have visits with relatives where they can touch each other without being divided by security measures will strengthen the prisoners' communication with their families and encourage them to be rehabilitated and become good people, and follow the rules of the prison,” states a Klong Prem Central Prison document dated January 4 and made public on Friday.

Up to 12 relatives will be allowed to visit those detained at any one time. The relatives will have to fill in a request form and must submit valid identification documents to the prison.

The detention facility is to also allow the creation of Krung Thai Bank accounts for those held there. Relatives will be able to transfer money to prisoners free of charge, the document said.

Nuth Savna, the spokesperson for the General Department of Prisons, said he estimated there were not less than 4,000 Cambodian nationals currently being detained in Thailand.
