Capital's Covid jab drive for children closes

The Covid-19 vaccination campaign to administer the first dose to the 12-17 age group in Phnom Penh wrapped up on August 14, though children who missed the shot can still get it at designated sites in the coming days.

Ngy Mean Heng, director of the Phnom Penh municipal Department of Health, said more than 176,200 children and adolescents in the capital had been vaccinated.

“We can extend the vaccination period for centres that still have children coming to get the vaccine. Actually, it was scheduled for 14 days, but we will still provide vaccines if more people come tomorrow or the following days,” he said.

He urged Phnom Penh residents to bring their children to get the first dose as soon as possible.

Health ministry spokeswoman Or Vandine, who is also head of the national Covid-19 vaccination programme, said more vaccines have been dispatched to provinces to administer to the 12-17 age group, after more three million doses arrived a few days ago.

“Previously, we had to wait for vaccines to arrive before we could administer them to people in the provinces. But now, [sufficient] vaccine supplies have arrived and we have distributed them to the provinces right away,” she said.

As of August 13, nearly half a million children throughout the country had been vaccinated.
