The Faculty of Education’s Department of Lifelong Learning at The Royal University of Phnom Penh announced a writing contest for Cambodian youths earlier this year and the deadline for submissions is approaching.

For the contest, candidates have to write about how “lifelong learning” has played or could play an important role in producing capable human resources to help turn Cambodia into an upper-middle income country by 2030 and a high-income country by 2050.

In a notice on the writing contest released in September, RUPP said that the closing date for submissions is November 5, 2022 at 4:30pm.

Dean of the Department of Life Long Learning Moeurn Chantrea mentioned the importance of the contest and noted the number of students who had submitted essays from various highschools in the capital and provinces in a recent social media post.

“This is the first contest and we may hold it annually in the future. We’re holding this contest to inspire Cambodian youths to learn about society and especially the key words of the topic: What is lifelong learning? What does an upper-middle income country by 2030 actually mean for the people living in it? What does a high-income country by 2050 mean?” he said.

He added that the goal of the contest is to guide them to think and to learn more about their nation’s society and to understand the government’s development vision.

The notice about the contest details that candidates must be students in grades 10, 11 or 12 for the 2021-2022 academic year. They must write as a group of three members and their work must be original and never before published or used in another contest.

Furthermore, the guidelines state that they have to make reasoned explanations as well as address the topics of their own futures, society and the nation. Their paper must be in essay format and they have to fully and clearly explain any illustrations, graphs or charts utilised.

Their essays can be no more than 10 pages in length, plus a bibliography with a list of cited works. For each work cited the entrants must include a description of the contents of the book.

Chantrea said that so far the department has received 38 entries from various high schools in eight cities and provinces.

The contest winners will receive prize money and their work will be published by the department. Interested candidates must send their essays to the department at RUPP’s Building A – 2nd Floor, Room 210B or as a PDF via Telegram to the numbers 081 242 890 or 017 903 212 or via email at: [email protected]
