At least eight people have died since May 28 – and 74 others have fallen ill – due to suspected rice wine poisoning incidents in four villages of Ansar Chambok commune in Pursat province's Krakor district, local authorities there have confirmed.

Khan Sambor, first deputy chief of Ansar Chambok commune, confirmed to the The Post on June 2 that a 75-year old local rice wine producer had been detained by police for questioning in connection to the incident.

He said the villagers had bought the wine from the suspect – who was distributing it from his home in the village – and they all drank it together as a group.

In May, a total of 22 people died from rice wine poisoning – 12 in Kandal province and another 10 in Kampot province.
