Banteay Meanchey provincial police on August 6 burned down 140 homemade rifles seized from various crimes in the province.

Bun Pheng, deputy provincial police chief in charge of ammunition and fire control, said during the burning ceremony that most of the rifles were made of wood. Some of them are air guns using small metal balls and some are crossbow rifle.

According to Pheng, the 140 rifles had been collected from the province's nine districts since 2017. They had been used by people for hunting.

Provincial police chief Sith Los said during the ceremony that the destruction of these rifles is a contribution to the government's "safe village/commune policy".

Los called on people to hand over all the rifles or guns they still possess to the authorities, otherwise they will face legal action if caught using them.
