The Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA) is preparing to declare Kampot province mine-free in April.

The achievement is thanks to the Samdach Techo Project for Mine Action (STO-MA) – themed “Providing Safe Ground, Creating Smiles.” Kampot will become the Kingdom’s 10th mine-free province.

The CMAA convened a March 3 meeting to discuss preparations to make the declaration on April 5. The meeting was attended by CMAA deputy secretary-general, Kampot deputy governor Siv Pheng and members of the mine clearing units that were involved.

CMAA first vice-president Ly Thuch declared Kampong Chhnang the ninth mine-free province on March 2, albeit with a warning for vigilance to be maintained as some unexploded ordnance (UXO) may remain.

He said the CMAA would continue to cooperate with development partners, demining operators and relevant parties to fulfil the joint vision of a mine-free Cambodia in 2025.

Stung Treng, Kep, Prey Veng, Phnom Penh, Preah Sihanouk, Tbong Khmum, Kampong Cham, Svay Rieng and Kampong Chhnang provinces have all been declared mine-free.
