The Kampot Provincial Court on Tuesday charged two suspects and held them in pre-trial detention for illegal drug trafficking.

Provincial court spokesman Man Boreth said on Tuesday that the court had charged the two men – Hong Sitha, 31, and Sambor Yuthanak, 27 – with “possession and trafficking of illegal addictive substances” under Article 16 of the Law on the Control of Drugs.

“The court has charged them and ordered that they be held in pre-trial detention in Kampot prison on August 27,” said Boreth.

Provincial Military Police commander Keo Sophal declined to comment, but a provincial Military Police officer who asked not to be named said officials from its Anti-Drug Bureau arrested the two in a raid on Sunday in Teuk Chhou district’s Chum Kriel village.

He said Sitha had previously been arrested by Military Police and was recently released from prison.

Authorities confiscated five large packets of a white powder and 13 smaller ones weighing 529.39g in total, a scale, some plastic bags, a phone and a motorbike.

In a separate case, the Kandal Provincial Court ordered the pre-trial detention of a husband and a wife in Kandal prison after Takhmao town police detained them in connection with drug dealing and illegal substance abuse in their rented room in Takhmao commune.

Provincial court spokesman So Sarin on Tuesday said Van Sopanha, the investigating judge, ordered the detention of the two on charges of “possession and trafficking of illegal addictive substances” under Article 16 of the Law on the Control of Drugs.

“They were ordered detained on August 25 and I am not aware of when their hearing would be held,” he said.

Takhmao town deputy police chief in charge of drug enforcement Khut Sothea said he sent the couple to the provincial court on Saturday after his specialists questioned them.

“We investigated them for many days before their arrest and are further investigating to arrest any potential drug trafficking accomplices,” he said.

He identified the pair as husband Voeun Vireak, 35, and his wife Kuch Phal, 31. Both are footwear salespersons.

Sarin said police confiscated 870 WY yaba tablets, two large and three medium packets of white powdered methamphetamine, one each of a large and small scale, other equipment for packing drugs and a motorbike.
