The Ministry of Health and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have collaborated to develop the Safe Delivery app in Khmer language for healthcare workers to ensure the safety of mothers and newborns in Cambodia.
According to a joint press release, the app – a collaboration through the Project for Improving Continuum of Care with focus on Intrapartum and Neonatal Care (JICA-IINeoC Project) and the Maternity Foundation – is a tool that provides training and support to healthcare workers who are giving care to mothers and newborns.
Cambodian midwives and other obstetricians are responsible for the lives of mothers and newborns every day. To provide proper training and support to health care workers, the Safe Delivery app is one of the best new tools and is easy to use, effective and innovative, according to the press statement.
It the app is free to use and can be used offline.
The instructions it provides are a lively guide for healthcare staff in an emergency obstetric or neonatal care situation, as well as giving advice on managing the condition of patients who have Covid-19.
The app includes videos, questionnaires, descriptions of actual procedures and a list of medications that midwives and health care workers often refer to when they are working or as part of their training.
Although Cambodia is recognised as one of the few countries that has successfully achieved the Millennium Development Goals for mother and baby, the maternal mortality rate is still estimated at 160 deaths among 100,000 live births and the infant mortality rate was 25 deaths out of 1,000 live births in 2017.
“Improving maternal and child health is a priority for the government,” the press release said.
Anna Frellsen, executive director of the Maternity Foundation, said: “We look forward to the day we can get the Safe Delivery app into the hands of midwives and other obstetricians across Cambodia.”
Anna added that they save lives every day and the Maternity Foundation can provide support to them through the app, a new complement to their work and training.
Anna thanked the health ministry and JICA for its wonderful partnership.
Kamel Haruko, chief representative for the JICA Cambodia office, strongly believes that the Safe Delivery app will encourage healthcare workers and help with providing safe delivery services for mothers and newborns in Cambodia.
The app can be downloaded for free from Google Play Store for Android users and in the Apple App Store for iPhone users.
