The Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training shared that over 120,000 applications have been received for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes in the past 500 days, indicating the contribution the programme will make to enhancing the national workforce.
During a June 10 press conference on preparations for this year’s National Technical and Vocational Education and Training Day, labour ministry spokesperson Sun Mesa noted that the TVET programme, implemented in late 2023, has been running for 500 days.
The programme is aimed at youth from poor and vulnerable families.
He noted that during this period, the ministry received over 120,000 applications for TVET training, with more than 70,000 individuals either currently studying or having completed their training, securing decent salaries.
He added that popular areas of study include manufacturing, such as factories or processing plants, mechanics, business, information technology, tourism, agriculture, construction and electrical energy, all of which are priority sectors driving Cambodia’s economic growth.
The national TVET Day is a nationwide event. This year’s event, the 8th, will take place June 15-16, with the theme “TVET Creates Job Opportunities, Building Hope for Youth” at the Koh Pich Convention and Exhibition Centre. Smaller events will take place across the Kingdom, with at least 70,000 people expected to participate, according to Mesa.
“TVET Day aims to promote and highlight the value of technical and vocational training, raising awareness among citizens, young students, the private sector and all other stakeholders about its importance, particularly in the context of Cambodia. Another key objective is for the government to develop a skilled, high-quality and efficient workforce to meet the demands of both domestic and international labour markets,” he explained.
Hing Sideth, director-general of the General Department of Technical and Vocational Education and Training, noted that as technology advances, TVET plays a crucial role. Therefore, the government is committed to training more human resources.
This year’s TVET Day will showcase 128 student achievements, including drones and automatic coffee machines among others, along with 205 exhibition booths featuring participation from government institutions and 131 private sector entities.
