Minister of Health Mam Bun Heng expressed his admiration for Cambodia's accomplishments in women’s health, noting that almost all pregnant women received examinations and delivery by skilled midwifes, and a vast majority of them gave birth at health facilities.
The minister attended the opening of the 22nd “Let’s improve women's health” workshop, organised by the Cambodia Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics on June 2 at Phnom Penh Hotel.
“Bun Heng highlighted the progress the Kingdom has made in women’s health, and said 99 per cent of pregnant women received their examinations and delivery by skilled midwifes. 97 per cent of the women gave birth to their babies at health facilities,” said a health ministry social media post.
The post added that the maternal mortality rate had decreased from 170 per 100,000 live births in 2014 to 154 per 1,000,000 in 2021. The mortality rate of children under five had dropped from 35 per 1,000 live births in 2014 to 16.
It said the mortality rate of children under one year of age had been reduced from 28 per 1,000 live births in 2014 to 12 in 2021, according to the Cambodia Demographic and Health Survey 2021-2022.
