The authorities cordoned off 14 locations in the vicinity of Prey Tea market in Phnom Penh’s Por Sen Chey district on the night of May 24 after scores of people tested positive for Covid-19 at the market and a factory in the area.

According to a National Police report on May 25, at least 200 out of 2,000 workers at the H7 Factory have tested positive. Medical workers are continuing to test people who have been in direct and indirect contact with them.

People in the locations are banned from entry and exit, while those from outside are not allowed to enter the area to prevent the virus spreading.

The municipal administration also called on people who have been in contact with infected persons to report to local authorities and be tested.

During a video conference meeting attended by the governors of Sen Sok, Russey Keo and Por Sen Chey districts on measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19 on May 25, municipal governor Khuong Sreng urged the authorities to increase efforts to contain the pandemic.

He said that in cordoned-off areas, the focus was to stop the spread of Covid-19. If the problem is beyond local jurisdiction, district authorities must contact the municipal administration or the Ministry of Health for assistance.

“The authorities of the three districts with cordoned-off areas have to monitor and take clear measures because what we want to do is stop the virus,” he said.

He also ordered administrative and legal punishment against people violating the Covid-19 control law.

“The vast majority of people have adhered to preventive measures by wearing a mask . . . but a small number of people are still negligent, especially recently. As Covid-19 has somewhat subsided, certain youths are starting to violate the measures,” he said.
