With the Covid-19 pandemic far from over, big and small markets alike in the provinces have shuttered their businesses to contain the spread of the virus after a number customers and vendors have tested positive.

Recently, the virus has forced markets to close again in Phnom Penh and now markets elsewhere are following suit, and the Ministry of Health has sounded the alarm as it is recording nearly 1,000 new infections and between 20 and 30 deaths a day in the past month.

In an effort to contain community outbreak, provincial authorities have upped Covid-19 preventative health measures and temporarily shut down markets again after detecting on-site infections.

Siem Reap provincial authorities on July 6 shuttered two markets for 14 days from July 7-12 – Phsar Leu Thom Tmey in Siem Reap town’s Slakram commune and Preah Dak in Banteay Srei district.

Banteay Srei governor Khim Finan said that after closely watching developments of the spread of Covid-19 in the community, the district working group decided to temporarily shut to market after people at the location tested positive for the virus.

The number of people infected in the district has skyrocketed and there have been deaths.

In Kampong Speu province, the authorities temporarily suspended Slab Leng Market in Baset district’s Svay Rompear commune from July 5-18 after people tested positive for Covid-19.

In Kandal province, the authorities suspended Kampong Kantuot Market in Kandal Stueng district’s Barku commune for 14 days from July 6-19.

In Banteay Meanchey province, Mongkol Borei district governor Roth Da Sinong temporarily cordoned off an apartment building in Russey Krork commune from July 6 after three vendors tested positive for Covid-19.

Regarding colour-coded zones, the Siem Reap Provincial Administration has lifted restrictions in the yellow zone in Trapaing Thom commune’s Anlong II village in Prasat Bakong district.

In Preah Sihanouk province, the authorities on July 6 designated some parts of Sihanoukville as yellow zones in a bid to curb the spread of virus.
