The tally for the coronavirus Delta variant in Cambodia has reached 1,538 after 212 new cases were confirmed in just three days – 71 on August 25, 138 on August 26 and three on August 27.

Delta has spread to most parts of the country with only Kep and Kratie provinces having been spared from the highly contagious strain.

Phnom Penh has recorded the most cases at 453, followed by Banteay Meanchey at 286, Oddar Meanchey at 207 and Siem Reap at 178.

In the capital on August 27, the Covid-19 tracing sub-commission detected the three Delta cases on tenants of rental units in Chom Chao I commune's Trapaing Thleung 3 village of Por Sen Chey district.

The trio were among more than 200 people who were tested on suspicion of carrying the virus.

Separately, the sub-commission said medical workers were administering a third Covid-19 test to 119 people residing in the vicinity of the improvised Dumex market in Prampi Makara district who have been in contact with Delta-infected persons. All the 119 residents tested negative, it said.

Minister of Health Mam Bun Heng has reiterated his call for the public to increase vigilance.

“We have to adapt to the new normal to contain and prevent the spread of the virus, especially the Delta variant,” he said.
