Murder suspect found dead

A Vietnamese man detained at the Kandal provincial police station took his own life while in custody on Friday, officers said yesterday.

Nguyen Yaingchin, 37, had been arrested on Thursday in Phnom Penh’s Tuol Kork district on charges of murdering his wife in Kien Svay district, provincial police chief Eav Chamroeun said.

Police claim Nguyen had confessed to the murder during questioning. “He wanted to die rather than be in jail,” Chamroeun said, adding that Yaingchin had attempted suicide a few days before.

Yaingchin’s wife was stabbed and her body dumped in a canal.
