Prime Minister Hun Sen has offered further assistance to 23 provinces in the form of cash and medical supplies to provide for the nearly 100,000 people currently under quarantine across the country from June 28 through July 4.

The Ministry of Health said in a report that the financial support amounted to 2.83 billion riel ($700,000) in total to the 23 provinces, with the exception of the capital and Mondulkiri province, where there is only one person in quarantine and the money previously allocated for its budget has not yet been fully used.

The report detailed that each of the 23 provinces were provided with sums ranging from 10 to 360 million riel. Battambang, where 2,180 people are currently in quarantine, received the most at 380 million riel.

Banteay Meanchey received the second-highest support at 290 million riel for 1,775 people.

The other provinces among those receiving the largest support packages included Kampong Speu with 280 million riel for 1,460 people and Kampong Cham at 270 million riel for its quarantine population of 1,746.

Preah Sihanouk currently has as many as 82,299 people in quarantine but it did not receive a large sum because the assistance previously provided to the province has not run out yet.

The prime minister also provided additional assistance in the form of material goods to seven provinces bordering Thailand: Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Oddar Meanchey, Pailin, Koh Kong, Pursat and Preah Vihear. The material assistance includes essential items like bottled water and sleeping mats.

“These seven border provinces have nearly 60,000 people in quarantine and were provided with 16,500 test kits, rubber mats, mosquito nets, blankets, pillows, sarongs and scarves, ” the report said.
