Preah Sihanouk provincial authorities announced on August 12 that they had detected the first coronavirus Delta variant case in an eight-year-old boy who returned from Thailand with his parents.
The boy arrived in Cambodia through the Doung International Border Checkpoint in Battambang province but was sent into quarantine in neighbouring Banteay Meanchey province on July 20.
On August 6, he arrived in Preah Sihanouk, where he was placed in quarantine and his sample taken for Covid-19 testing by the Institut Pasteur du Cambodge the next day. He was confirmed positive for Delta on August 12.
It was not immediately clear if his parents have also contracted the virus.
Although it is an imported case, the provincial administration urged the public to be highly vigilant and strictly follow health measures.
