Preah Sihanouk provincial governor Kuch Chamroeun instructed local authorities to increase their vigilance of the weather at sea.

An increase in stormy weather has been recorded in recent weeks, he said.

He said authorities must pay particular attention to operation of commercial tourist vessels, ensuring that only watercraft with adequate safety equipment are allowed to operate. Officials ought to monitor wind and wave levels, and be prepared to ban boat traffic if conditions become dangerous.

“Signs should be erected announcing delays or postponements of sailings to ensure the safety of passengers,” he said, urging commercial fisherman to consider delaying their trips out to sea if conditions were not favourable.

Authorities must also inform the fishing community and their families – along with island dwellers – to be wary of poor conditions or an increase in large waves.
