THE head of Preah Sihanouk provincial prison says mezzanines will be built in inmates’ cells in a bid to ease overcrowding, following the death last week of a prisoner who fell from a bunk bed and injured his head. “We are building inside mezzanines in 10 rooms this week because we want to enlarge the rooms for the prisoners to live in,” said Top Sophea, the prison’s director. Windows are also to be constructed to allow air into the cells. He said the prison’s population had risen from around 200 prisoners last year to 350 currently.
