A security guard was hit and killed during an apparent road rage altercation late on Sunday in Phnom Penh’s Dangkor commune, while his cousin was severely injured after the two were involved in a physical brawl with the suspects, police told The Post on Monday.

Um Tol, also known as Linh, 27, was reportedly on his phone and shouting while walking in front of a Toyota Highlander, carrying eight people who had just come from a karaoke parlour – alleged to be intoxicated at the time.

One of the eight assumed Linh had shouted at them, so he lowered the window and yelled back at the victim, after which a verbal fight started.

Moments later, the suspected drunken suspect got off the car and punched Linh multiple times.

Initially, only one person from the car was involved in the brawl, but according to Dangkor commune police chief Ton Tony, the suspect’s friends immediately joined in and begun assaulting Linh after he pushed the suspect to the vehicle.

Provoked and refused to be defeated, Linh left to find his cousin, Oeun Bunthan, 23, who lived nearby.

The two then joined forces and threw rocks at the car, forcing the other group to back off and go back inside their vehicle.

“After that, the car drove off and hit the two, killing one [Linh] and injuring another [Bunthan],” Tony said.

Witnesses told the police that both groups had weapons during the fracas. The suspects held sticks and the duo was equipped with knives and swords.

After the accident, police found evidence comprising stones and swords at the crime scene. The suspects had fled the location earlier.

An investigation is underway and Dangkor commune police are searching for the suspects, Tony said.

Linh’s body, he continued, has been returned to the family for his funeral.
