The Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA) announced that Svay Rieng province will be declared mine-free in June 2023, when more than 12sq km has been demined.

In an August 25 press release, the CMAA said demining officials from the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) have been deployed to clear landmines in the province with the support of the Samdech Techo Project for Mine Action under the slogan “Providing Safe Ground, Creating Smiles.” Eight districts in the province are afflicted by landmines.

Meeting with the officials on August 25, Ly Thuch, Senior Minister and first vice-president of the CMAA said: “We will finish demining in Svay Rieng province in 11 months, and declare the remaining 12.38sq km free of landmines.”

He requested that officials clear landmines and destroy them to provide safe ground and create smiles for the general public.

He commended the CMAC for its work in developing the country, and providing safety to the people through its mine clearance work.

He said that with the permission of Prime Minister Hun Sen, the CMAA had deployed demining forces in five provinces – Kampong Cham, Kampong Chhnang, Takeo, Kampot and Svay Rieng – spanning 31sq km of mined land.

At the meeting, Svay Rien provincial governor Men Vibol called on authorities at all levels to cooperate fully with the CMAC demining forces who are carrying out the prime minister’s project.
