The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport is recruiting 150 students to attend physical education and sports training courses for the academic year 2021-2022 at the National Institute of Physical Education and Sports (NIPES).

After the courses are completed, they would then be dispatched to the capital and 20 of the Kingdom’s 24 provinces – with the exceptions of Kampot, Kep, Takeo and Mondulkiri.

Those in Phnom Penh will be working at the National Centre for Information Technology and Sports Statistics and the Department of Sports Event Planning and Management.

According to the ministry’s announcement, this will be the 30th class. The 150 trainees will include 125 places for those earning associate’s degrees – also called the 12+2 programme, meaning 12 grades to earn a high school diploma plus two years of university study for their associate’s degree – and 25 places for those earning bachelor’s degrees specialising in physical education, also called the 12+4 programme.

“The 12+2 means that the degree they complete will provide them with basic teacher training. As for the 12+4, that will earn them a full bachelor’s degree. Some students do their associate’s and then complete the final two years for their BA while working part-time,” said NIPES research director Preap Vutheara.

He said because this is a state programme, the government will provide the trainees with free dormitory accommodations and a small financial allowance.

“Their education is free and they also get a 40,000 riel stipend [$10] per month from the government,” he said.

Qualified candidates must be Cambodian citizens aged 17-25 by November 5 of this year. They must hold a high school diploma or equivalent degree. Female candidates must be 1.55m or more in height and male candidates must be 1.65m or more in height due to the physical demands and athletic nature of the jobs.

“National team athletes who have competed at the SEA Games, Asian Games or the Olympic Games are allowed to take the entrance exam at NIPES with full waivers granted for all height and age requirements,” the statement said.
